5 Advanced TIG Welding Techniques for Perfect Welds
Pulse TIG Welding:
 
Commonly used in the aerospace and automotive industries, pulse TIG welding alternates between high and low current to better control heat input. This technique allows for better control which results in cleaner welds and therefore a better look. This technique is especially beneficial for thinner metals since it prevents warping.
 
 
Precision Torch and Arc Control:
 
The key to a cleaner weld comes down to control and torch positioning. The sweet spot is an angle of 15-20 degrees with an arc distance of 1/16 to 1/8 inch. This creates an appropriate angle to heat the depositing material, and it’s the right distance to develop an arc while keeping the weld within the coverage of shielding gas, preventing contamination from the surrounding air.
 
  
Meticulous Tungsten Electrode Preparation:
 
A weld can only be as good as the Tungsten electrode. If your electrode is damaged, contaminated, or blunt, your weld will suffer because the arc will be insufficient. Always grind your tungsten electrode prior to welding, using a quality tool like the Cordless Sharpie DX™. Ensure you are grinding it in the longitudinal direction, running it lengthwise to prevent contamination. During a weld, never let the tungsten rod make contact with the metal being joined or the filler material so as to avoid tungsten contamination.
 
 
Controlled Heat Input and Power Management:
 
Too much heat can cut through or damage the metal you’re welding while not enough heat can lead to an insufficient or weak weld. Managing the current with a foot pedal allows you to find the proper heat input throughout a weld. Also tapering off towards the end produces a more aesthetically pleasing weld.
 
 
Cleanliness and Joint Preparation:
 
A clean weld is only possible with clean conditions. This means preparing the joint and keeping it free of any, and we mean “any,” debris. Use a degreaser on the metal and use a metal brush to scrub the area thoroughly. Make sure to deburr the edges and wipe the surfaces with acetone before welding.
