{"id":235,"date":"2009-02-25T10:37:07","date_gmt":"2009-02-25T18:37:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.carmenelectrode.com\/?p=235"},"modified":"2012-06-06T10:57:39","modified_gmt":"2012-06-06T18:57:39","slug":"we-need-more-girls-in-engineering","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.arc-zone.com\/carmenelectrode\/2009\/02\/25\/we-need-more-girls-in-engineering\/","title":{"rendered":"We Need More Girls in Engineering"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I remember when I was in middle school and I had just been transferred to the 8th grade Algebra I class (I was in 7th grade).\u00a0 I was so excited, but I remember someone telling me how boys were better than girls at math.\u00a0 I looked around at all the other students in the class and the ratio of boys to girls was just about equal.\u00a0 I was confused.\u00a0 Did being good at math mean that we girls were somehow more masculine?\u00a0 Did it mean that even though we were in the same class and getting the same grades meant that the boys were somehow still innately better at it than we were?<\/p>\n<p>Hardly.\u00a0 And yet the stereotype still persists.\u00a0 There are so many girls out there who are gifted in the math and science areas, but because they are told that &#8220;boys are better&#8221; than them, they drop out.\u00a0 They move on.<\/p>\n<p>I know that many women out there have stories like that.\u00a0 But hopefully, there will be fewer and fewer as the years progress.\u00a0 One program that is trying to make a difference is <em>Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day<\/em>, as hosted by ExxonMobil.\u00a0 The goal of this program and others like it is to fill the gender gap and diminish the shortage of qualified workers in this and similar fields:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day Activities at ExxonMobil Emphasize Importance of Engineering to Nation\u2019s Middle School Girls <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Fourteen ExxonMobil Facilities Welcome Middle School Girls as \u2018New Hires\u2019 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>IRVING, Texas&#8211;(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/\">BUSINESS WIRE<\/a><sup>1<\/sup>)&#8211;More than 3,000 middle school girls will be greeted as \u201cNew Hires\u201d in the next week as they visit local ExxonMobil facilities and get a first-hand experience as an engineer. The event, taking place nationwide at ExxonMobil locations, is part of the company\u2019s participation in <em>Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day <\/em>and National Engineers Week<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For the second year, the company also will host the <em>ExxonMobil Girls in Engineering Festival<\/em> in Houston where middle school girls from three Houston-area school districts will participate in a day-long event on Feb. 14.<\/p>\n<p>Both activities are rewarding to middle school girls as ExxonMobil employees seek to persuade them that engineering is \u201ccool\u201d and opens doors of opportunity to them if they choose it as a career.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Girls in Engineering\" href=\"http:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/portal\/site\/exxonmobil\/index.jsp?ndmViewId=news_view&amp;ndmConfigId=1001106&amp;newsId=20090209006017&amp;newsLang=en\" target=\"_blank\">CONTINUE READING ONLINE -&gt;<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So I applaud all of you who have taken an interest in welding, an undoubtedly &#8220;masculine&#8221;
