{"id":2648,"date":"2012-08-21T13:08:09","date_gmt":"2012-08-21T21:08:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.arc-zone.com\/blog\/carmenelectrode\/?p=2648"},"modified":"2012-08-21T13:56:31","modified_gmt":"2012-08-21T21:56:31","slug":"tips-for-welding-titanium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.arc-zone.com\/carmenelectrode\/2012\/08\/21\/tips-for-welding-titanium\/","title":{"rendered":"Tips for Welding Titanium"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Many of our <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.arc-zone.com\/carmenelectrode\/category\/new-rosies\/\" target=\"_blank\">New Rosies<\/a> stress the importance of knowing your craft well, of doing your job to the best of your abilities, and getting as much education as you can in order to succeed at your welding job.\u00a0 Many also mention that TIG\/GTAW welding is a good route for women welders because it is \u201cclean\u201d and requires dexterity and patience\u2014two things women are particularly good at.\u00a0 I would add that welding titanium (or other specialty metals) would be good skill to add to your resume.\u00a0 Titanium welding is popular in the aerospace and defense industries, power generation, marine industries, processing plants, and even bicycle manufacturing.\u00a0 And, if you can weld titanium, you can make some good coin.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A lot of welders think titanium is difficult to weld, but really, like anything else, it takes knowledge and practice. Titanium is referred to as a reactive metal because it does not take kindly to contamination, and in fact, a contaminated Titanium weld can actually become brittle (something you definitely don\u2019t want heading down a rough trail in a mountain bike).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2655\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2655\" style=\"width: 223px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.arc-zone.com\/carmenelectrode\/2012\/08\/21\/tips-for-welding-titanium\/hand-held-grinder-vignette-sharpie-1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2655\"><img loading=\"lazy\" desirable because it is strong and lightweight, and resists corrosion, but the welder must take care to weld it correctly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The first step to welding titanium is to make sure your fab shop is clean.\u00a0 You don\u2019t necessarily need a hi-tech white clean room, and you won\u2019t need to wear little paper booties, but the area where you will be welding should be as free of moisture, dust, grease and any other contaminants as you can attain.\u00a0 You\u2019ll also want to be free of air drafts&#8211;\u00a0 turbulent air can draw in oxygen, which ruin your weld.\u00a0 Some people use purge chambers which enclose your weld area.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2657\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2657\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arc-zone.com\/index.php?main_page=index&amp;cPath=10_143\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2657\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" to make sure your joint surfaces are smooth and clean.\u00a0 You can use a stainless steel brush, but make sure it\u2019s one reserved only for your titanium welding, otherwise you\u2019ll get cross contamination, and don\u2019t use a steel file, sandpaper, or steel wool, which can leave particles in your base metal.\u00a0 Also you can clean your base metal with denatured alcohol and a lint-free rag.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2658\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2658\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arc-zone.com\/index.php?main_page=index&amp;cPath=585\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2658\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2658 \" title=\"Arc-Zone's Stainless Steel Scratch Brush \" src=\"https:\/\/blog.arc-zone.com\/carmenelectrode\/wp-content\/uploads\/smallbrush.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2658\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Arc-Zone&#8217;s Stainless Steel Scratch Brush<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I mentioned air drafts because oxygen contamination is one of the most common reasons for sub-standard titanium welds, so you\u2019ll need to protect the front and often the back side of your weld until the temperature of your weld zone drops below 800\u00b0 F (427\u00b0 C).\u00a0 Generally, you\u2019ll use argon for your shield gas and you\u2019ll want to make sure your gas is from a trusted source and that all the leads and fittings have been tested.\u00a0 Same with your TIG\/GTAW torch:\u00a0 make sure all your fittings fit and that your torch insulators and o-rings offer a proper seal.\u00a0 And finally, you\u2019ll want a super large nozzle with a gas lens or gas flow straightener, or a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arc-zone.com\/index.php?main_page=index&amp;cPath=10_235_574\" target=\"_blank\"> Large Gas Saver nozzle<\/a> and you\u2019ll want to adjust your flow rate for good coverage and no turbulence.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2656\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2656\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arc-zone.com\/index.php?main_page=index&amp;cPath=10_235_574\" shield cups**, and while that may be fine if you\u2019re noodling around in your own shop, in a more professional application you may want to use trailing and auxiliary shields that are highly engineered for consistent performance.\u00a0 This is especially important in an automated application, or any welding process that requires consistency and\u00a0repeatability.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2654\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2654\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arc-zone.com\/index.php?main_page=index&amp;cPath=990_1053_1055_1058_1062\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2654\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2654 \" title=\"Arc-Zone's Auxiliary Shield\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.arc-zone.com\/carmenelectrode\/wp-content\/uploads\/fade7.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\"
