{"id":414,"date":"2009-06-12T07:45:25","date_gmt":"2009-06-12T15:45:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.carmenelectrode.com\/?p=414"},"modified":"2009-05-29T07:46:19","modified_gmt":"2009-05-29T15:46:19","slug":"the-psychology-behind-the-scholarly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.arc-zone.com\/carmenelectrode\/2009\/06\/12\/the-psychology-behind-the-scholarly\/","title":{"rendered":"The Psychology Behind the Scholarly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Why is it that so many more men than women end up in careers in the math and science arena? \u00a0Is it because men have more aptitude than women? \u00a0Or is it because we think that they do? \u00a0Psychologist Nadya Fouad explores this and other possible explanations in this fascinating article:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Tracking The Reasons Many Girls Avoid Science And Math<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ScienceDaily (Sep. 8, 2008) \u2014 Most parents and many teachers believe that if middle-school and high-school girls show no interest in science or math, there&#8217;s little anyone can do about it.<\/p>\n<p>New research by a team that includes vocational psychologists at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) indicates that the self-confidence instilled by parents and teachers is more important for young girls learning math and science than their initial interest.<\/p>\n<p>While interest is certainly a factor in getting older girls to study and pursue a career in these disciplines, more attention should be given to building confidence in their abilities early in their education, says UWM Distinguished Professor Nadya Fouad.
