{"id":236,"date":"2009-01-08T09:10:02","date_gmt":"2009-01-08T17:10:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/joewelder.com\/?p=236"},"modified":"2018-02-13T06:33:50","modified_gmt":"2018-02-13T14:33:50","slug":"metal-of-the-month-chromoly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.arc-zone.com\/joewelder\/2009\/01\/08\/metal-of-the-month-chromoly\/","title":{"rendered":"Metal of the Month: Chromoly"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>What is chromoly?<\/h2>\n<p>Last month we here at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arc-zone.com\" target=\"_blank\">Arc-Zone <\/a>published the first article in a series of posts we are doing called Metal of the Month. \u00a0The purpose of the series is to highlight different metals, provide readers with information about the properties of each metal, and offer our audience some general tips on how to weld with each metal successfully.\u00a0 This month we are going to discuss the metal Chromoly.<\/p>\n<p>4130 steel-an alloy steel, is commonly referred to as chromoly, an alloy which contains chromium and molybdenum among other elements.\u00a0 The number \u20184130&#8242; is a code that the American Iron &amp; Steel Institute (AISI 4-digit code system) uses to define the approximate chemical composition of the steel.\u00a0 The \u201841&#8242; indicates a low alloy steel containing chromium and molybdenum, while the \u201830&#8242; indicates a carbon content of 0.3%.\u00a0 The American Iron &amp; Steel Institute naming system is one of the most widely accepted systems.<\/p>\n<h2>Is chromoly stronger than steel?<\/h2>\n<p>Chromoly is stronger than normal steel, weight for weight, and is commonly used to make high-end bicycle frames, roll cages for race cars, and for fuselages on small aircraft.\u00a0 Chromoly&#8217;s high strength-to-weight ratio and high tensile strength makes it an ideal choice for these particular applications.\u00a0 In addition, 4130 is utilized in a variety of applications because of its weldability, formability, ductility and toughness.\u00a0 Overall it is considerably stronger and more durable than standard 1020 steel.\u00a0 While this particular grade of steel does contain chromium, it is not in enough quantities to provide the corrosion resistance found in stainless steel.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding the manufacturing of high-end bicycle frames, chromoly is typically used to make bikes lighter rather than stronger.\u00a0 This means that manufacturers use less of the steel so the strength is the same, but the weight is reduced.\u00a0 However, the stiffness of the steel is approximately the same, so with less of it to be stiff, the chromoly bike frame ends up more flexible than the standard steel one.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nOne of the most important characteristics of chromoly is its ability to be case hardened by carburization of the surface.\u00a0 The core of the material retains its bulk properties, while the outside is significantly hardened to reduce wear and tear on the part.\u00a0 This makes this particular grade of steel an excellent material for such uses as gears, piston pins, crankshafts, etc.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5092\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5092\" style=\"width: 175px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arc-zone.com\/index.php?main_page=index&amp;cPath=13\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5092\" alt=\"TIG Torch\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.arc-zone.com\/joewelder\/wp-content\/new_ups\/WP-20-25-PRO-4.gif\" width=\"175\" height=\"152\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5092\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Always use a high-quality TIG torch from a trusted supplier. Arc-Zone recommends CK Worldwide and Weldcraft TIG torches<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>WELDING WITH CHROMOLY:<\/p>\n<p>Welding 4130 is not that much different than welding steel or stainless steel as far as technique is concerned.\u00a0 There are just additional considerations to keep in mind when welding with chromoly.\u00a0 Research has been done that indicates that TIG welding is the fastest, cleanest and best way to weld 4130 chromoly tubing without risk of compromising material properties (provided the thickness does not exceed .120&#8243;).\u00a0 There are six main things to keep in mind when TIG welding 4130 chromoly tubing.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arc-zone.com\" target=\"_blank\">With the proper equipment from your friends over at Arc-Zone.com and the following tips, you&#8217;ll have the knowledge you need to successfully weld with chromoly.\u00a0 <\/a><\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0 Prepare the area to be welded thoroughly, ensuring that joint surfaces are smooth, clean and completely free of contamination.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0 Preheat is not necessary for tubing under .120&#8243; thick, however, it won&#8217;t hurt anything either.\u00a0 If the ambient temperature is less than 60 F\u00b0, preheat to at least 100 F\u00b0.\u00a0 This can be easily accomplished with a small propane torch.<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0 Make sure to weld a little bit slower than normal.\u00a0 This will slow the cooling rate and negate any chance of the welded area cooling too fast.<\/p>\n<p>4.\u00a0 Do not allow and breeze or drafts into the room in which the welding is taking place and do not speed cool the welds.<\/p>\n<p>5.\u00a0 Use a quality\u00a0TIG machine with high frequency starting to eliminate arc strikes.\u00a0 Doing so eliminates any chance of a brittle spot or cracks from forming.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3251\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3251\" style=\"width: 180px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arc-zone.com\/index.php?main_page=index&amp;cPath=14_154\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-3251\" alt=\"ArcTime Tungsten Electrodes\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.arc-zone.com\/joewelder\/wp-content\/new_ups\/arctime_LRG-300x300.jpg\" width=\"180\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.arc-zone.com\/joewelder\/wp-content\/new_ups\/arctime_LRG-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.arc-zone.com\/joewelder\/wp-content\/new_ups\/arctime_LRG-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blog.arc-zone.com\/joewelder\/wp-content\/new_ups\/arctime_LRG.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 180px) 100vw, 180px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3251\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">ArcTime Tungsten Electrodes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>6. As with your TIG torch, make sure you use quality tungsten electrodes from a trusted supplier. \u00a0Consider using tungsten like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arc-zone.com\/index.php?main_page=index&amp;cPath=14_154\">ArcTime(tm) hybrid tungsten electrodes which works with all machines and for all metals.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>7.\u00a0 Do not use 4130 rod. Using a slightly under matched filler metal gives better overall properties and just plain works a lot better . Use E70S2 TIG rod and call it a day. Taper off slowly to avoid crater holes that will turn to cracks later on.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is chromoly?
