{"id":4802,"date":"2013-04-10T08:14:17","date_gmt":"2013-04-10T16:14:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.arc-zone.com\/blog\/joewelder\/?p=4802"},"modified":"2013-05-09T16:14:52","modified_gmt":"2013-05-10T00:14:52","slug":"james-gang-racing-team","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.arc-zone.com\/joewelder\/2013\/04\/10\/james-gang-racing-team\/","title":{"rendered":"James Gang Racing Team"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve mentioned before on this blog that when I was a kid in the 70s my dad and I raced TT and Flat Track motorcycles, which we customized for optimum performance on the track.\u00a0 As I got older we started racing cars\u2014Sprint Cars. <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.arc-zone.com\/joewelder\/2012\/12\/28\/my-first-race-car\/\">My first race car started from a kit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>From there I was hooked on racing, on cars, and on metal fabrication and began working as a mechanic on a couple of local teams. One day I was approached by this young, fast driver, Lee James and his father in-law who were looking to put together a team to sweep the <a href=\"http:\/\/worldofoutlaws.com\/\">World of Outlaws<\/a>. They hired me: Lee James, Driver and James Watson, Chief Mechanic, became the James\u2019 Gang Racing Team.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.arc-zone.com\/joewelder\/2013\/04\/10\/james-gang-racing-team\/img090\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4805\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4805\" title=\"img090\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.arc-zone.com\/joewelder\/wp-content\/new_ups\/img090-e1356732008666.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"227\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the early days of the World of Outlaws teams would go to the races that offered the biggest purse and with the fastest cars they\u2019d take the prize money. The James\u2019 Gang rode number 15 custom built for speed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>OzCar 4 bar custom built Sprint Car chassis by Lee Osborne (TIG welded 4130 DOM tubing, mandrel bent and stress relived)<\/li>\n<li>Bailey Brothers 410 Cu. In. Fuel injected, dry sump, aluminum block and heads &#8220;Chevy&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Direct drive with solid 3&#8243; rear axle, magnesium rear end with quick-change gears<\/li>\n<li>TIG welded aluminum radiator<\/li>\n<li>Fuel Safe fuel bladder with Saldana tank<\/li>\n<li>Hunt ignition system<\/li>\n<li>Koni fully adjustable shocks<\/li>\n<li>Sander Engineering torsion bars<\/li>\n<li>Airheart 3 wheel disc brakes<\/li>\n<li>Lee power steering with quick-release steering wheel<\/li>\n<li>Cunningham super-lite spun aluminum wheels with bead locks<\/li>\n<li>Firestone drag 500 series tries<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.arc-zone.com\/joewelder\/wp-content\/new_ups\/Jim-Crew-Chief.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"\" alt=\"Jim Crew Chief\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.arc-zone.com\/joewelder\/wp-content\/new_ups\/Jim-Crew-Chief-1024x677.jpg\" width=\"614\" height=\"406\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We left California and headed to the season opening race at East Bay Raceway in northern Florida.\u00a0 The car had never been started, the first night on the track we broke the track record in qualifying.\u00a0 I will never forget Rick Ferkel, Sammy Swindell, Steve Kinser and Doug Wolfgang coming over to the car to see which tire we were running on the right rear, Gary Stanton wanted to know what cam we were running!\u00a0 (Schneider T154R).<\/p>\n<p>We ended up wining several preliminary races&#8211; Three &#8220;A&#8221; main events and finished 4th in the 1979 World of Outlaw National Points Standings!\u00a0 To run the entire 70 race championship series we needed to have everything with us when we were on the road.\u00a0 We designed and built a custom 35&#8242; long three axle trailer with a fully stocked repair shop, loaded with spare parts, engines, tires etc.\u00a0 Both the car and transporter were custom painted by Paul Knierim.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->One of the technical challenges of traveling from track to track is that you need to have the right tire and wheel combinations to optimize your cars speed and handling. \u00a0Check out our tire rack&#8211; we had space for 40 wheel and tire combinations!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.arc-zone.com\/joewelder\/2013\/04\/10\/james-gang-racing-team\/img085_2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4803\"><img Event at Ascot Park in Gardena Califronia. \u00a0An interesting note, after retiring Johnny Parsons was the Sales Manager for the one of the leading welding equipment manufacturers&#8211; Weldcraft for 5 years, and as you may know I left racing to work for Weldcraft as well.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.arc-zone.com\/joewelder\/wp-content\/new_ups\/1975-Rookie-of-the-year.jpg\"
