{"id":5629,"date":"2013-07-09T07:26:07","date_gmt":"2013-07-09T14:26:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.arc-zone.com\/blog\/joewelder\/?p=5629"},"modified":"2014-01-31T09:11:59","modified_gmt":"2014-01-31T17:11:59","slug":"made-welded-in-the-u-s-a","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.arc-zone.com\/joewelder\/2013\/07\/09\/made-welded-in-the-u-s-a\/","title":{"rendered":"Made (Welded) in the U.S.A."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arc-zone.com\/index.php?main_page=index&amp;cPath=14\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" alt=\"tungsten electrodes for welding\" src=\"https:\/\/www.arc-zone.com\/images\/categories\/amplify_tung.jpg\" width=\"103\" height=\"220\" \/><\/a>It&#8217;s particularly popular during times of recession (or economic recovery) to want to buy products with the Made in the USA label, to support our local economies, \u00a0our neighbors, our friends. \u00a0But what does &#8220;Made in the USA&#8221; mean in a global economy?<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The Federal Trade Commission says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For a product to be called Made in USA, or claimed to be of domestic origin without qualifications or limits on the claim, the product must be &#8220;all or virtually all&#8221; made in the U.S. The term &#8220;United States,&#8221; as referred to in the Enforcement Policy Statement, includes the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. territories and possessions.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Virtually all&#8221; means that all significant parts and processing must be made in in the USA and the final assembly must take place in the US for the &#8220;Made in the USA&#8221; label to comply with FTC regulations. \u00a0If you want even more details about what &#8220;Made in the USA&#8221; means, read \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/business.ftc.gov\/documents\/bus03-complying-made-usa-standard\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Complying with the Made in USA Standard&#8221; article on the FTC website.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In today&#8217;s global economy, it&#8217;s not always possible to find Made in the USA products. \u00a0A great example in the welding industry is<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arc-zone.com\/index.php?main_page=index&amp;cPath=14\" target=\"_blank\"> tungsten electrodes for TIG and Plasma Arc Welding<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>First thing to consider is that there are no tungsten mines in the U.S. \u00a0Almost all the world&#8217;s tungsten comes from Russia and China and at present there is \u00a0no manufacturing of tungsten electrodes in the United States. \u00a0But that doesn&#8217;t mean you have to sacrifice quality&#8230; \u00a0You&#8217;ll find all you need to know about choosing tungsten electrodes for your welding application in our white paper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arc-zone.com\/pdf\/Tungsten_Electrodes.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Choosing Tungsten Electrodes (.pdf)<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><em>But what about Sylvania Tungsten?<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>Until recently (December 2012) the folks that brought you the light bulb, also manufactured <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arc-zone.com\/index.php?main_page=index&amp;cPath=14_1735\" target=\"_blank\">tungsten electrodes for welding&#8211; first under the Sylvania brand, and then under the GTP label<\/a>. You may find some stock still available, mostly in the less common diameters, but that will soon be gone.<\/p>\n<h2>Focus on Quality Tungsten Electrodes<\/h2>\n<p>In regards to tungsten electrodes, it&#8217;s important to do business with a trusted supplier.
