Once the flash of the sun reappears, it\u2019s time to get back under the hood, outfitted with a #14 lens or an ISO 12312-2 compliant &amp; CE certified pair of special shades.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>There\u2019s an Eclipse, You Say&#8230;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1,000\u2019s of towns &amp; cities and 14 states from sea to shining sea, there will be total darkness for over 2 minutes in the middle of the day. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The last time the contiguous U.S. experienced a total eclipse, bell bottoms and disco were all the rage &amp; the year was 1979. During a solar eclipse, the moon obstructs the Earth\u2019s view of the sun completely or in part. The entire event will last about 3 hours, but the longest period of total darkness will be under 3 minutes. Oregonians will be the first in the U.S. to dawn their eclipse lenses at 9:05 am PDT with totality commencing at 10:16 am PDT. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>So Why Do Eclipses Happen?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.skyandtelescope.com\/observing\/solar-and-lunar-eclipses-in-2017\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sky &amp; Telescope<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does a good job of describing how and why: <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA <\/span><b><i>solar eclipse\u2026 <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">occurs only at new Moon, when the lunar disk passes directly between us and the Sun. Conversely, a <\/span><b><i>lunar eclipse<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> takes place during full Moon, when our satellite passes through Earth&#8217;s shadow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These alignments don&#8217;t happen at <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">every<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> new and full Moon because the lunar orbit is tipped about 5\u00b0 to Earth&#8217;s orbital plane \u2014 only occasionally do the Sun, Earth, and Moon line up exactly enough for an eclipse to occur. (The technical name for that, by the way, is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">syzygy<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solar eclipses more tightly restrict where you can see them because the Moon casts a smaller shadow than Earth does. If the Moon completely hides the Sun, the eclipse is considered <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">total<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. With its brilliant disk completely covered, the Sun&#8217;s ghostly white outer atmosphere is momentarily revealed for durations from seconds to several minutes. In November 2013, for example, planeloads of eclipse-chasers converged in a remote portion of northern Kenya to watch just <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11 seconds<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of totality.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7792\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.arc-zone.com\/joewelder\/wp-content\/new_ups\/Screen-Shot-2017-08-04-at-12.26.59-PM-300x113.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"356\" height=\"134\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.arc-zone.com\/joewelder\/wp-content\/new_ups\/Screen-Shot-2017-08-04-at-12.26.59-PM-300x113.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.arc-zone.com\/joewelder\/wp-content\/new_ups\/Screen-Shot-2017-08-04-at-12.26.59-PM-625x235.png 625w, https:\/\/blog.arc-zone.com\/joewelder\/wp-content\/new_ups\/Screen-Shot-2017-08-04-at-12.26.59-PM-624x234.png 624w, https:\/\/blog.arc-zone.com\/joewelder\/wp-content\/new_ups\/Screen-Shot-2017-08-04-at-12.26.59-PM.png 746w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 356px) 100vw, 356px\" \/> <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A completely eclipsed Sun can be viewed only from a narrow track or path on Earth&#8217;s surface that&#8217;s typically just 100 miles (160 km) wide. Outside of that path, about half of the daylit hemisphere of Earth is able to watch a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">partial<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> eclipse as the Moon obscures a portion of the Sun.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The [August 21st Total Solar] eclipse in 2017&#8230; is a very special one. Whenever the Moon covers the Sun, the narrow path of totality can be anywhere in the world \u2014 often traversing remote locations. But this year&#8217;s event is very close to home for many of us, because the 70-mile-wide path of totality stretches from the Pacific to the Atlantic across the continental United States. The Moon&#8217;s full shadow hasn&#8217;t passed over any U.S. soil since 1991 (Hawaii) nor across any part of the contiguous 48 states since 1979. Moreover, a total solar eclipse hasn&#8217;t run coast to coast since 1918!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Be Safe!<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arc Flash is no joke! Welders understand the importance of safeguarding their eyes from the scorching effects of UV radiation.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shade #14<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the recommended minimum protection for welding at 400 Amps or for staring at the sun. Can you say, it\u2019s getting hot in here? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve haven\u2019t found any auto-darkening TIG welding helmets that go above a Shade #12 or #13\u2026 cuz Shade #14 and above isn\u2019t really used for TIG. At that amperage, you\u2019re probably carbon arc welding (CAW). Yikes! It&#8217;s Just UV Light&#8230;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\"><strong>UV Radiation Damage &gt;&gt;&gt; <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 180px;\"><strong>Corneal Epithelial Injury &gt;&gt;&gt; <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 240px;\"><strong>Ultraviolet Keratitis &gt;&gt;&gt; <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 300px;\"><strong>Chronic Solar Toxicity &gt;&gt;&gt;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Protecting one\u2019s eyes is no joke and should be taken seriously. Dr. Alex Koyfman authored a <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/s3boardvitals-v3\/emergency+medicine\/32802_q1.jpg\" width=\"138\" height=\"137\" \/>short overview of the causes of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/emedicine.medscape.com\/article\/799025-overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultraviolet Keratitis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and it definitely scared us straight\u2026 Please share \u00a0to make sure that everyone you know is viewing the eclipse safely (&amp; welding safely) and understands the consequences of not protecting their eyes. The more frequently or longer your eyes are exposed to harmful UV radiation the worse your eyes can become, as the damage is cumulative and you may not really feel\/see the effects of previous years of exposure until it\u2019s too late. Definitely, the best idea we\u2019ve read about!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Final Notes about How to View Safely:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eclipse2017.nasa.gov\/safety\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Excerpt from NASA:<\/b><\/a><b>\u00a0 &#8220;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experts suggest that one widely available filter for safe solar viewing is number 14 welder&#8217;s glass. It is imperative that the welding hood houses a #14 or darker filter. Do not view through any welding glass if you do not know or cannot discern its shade number. Be advised that arc welders typically use glass with a shade much less than the necessary #14. A welding glass that permits you to see the landscape is not safe.
