FORGOTTEN WOMEN BUILDERS… FOR 75 YEARS

The Waterloo Bridge was first erected in 1817. Over 100 years later, the bridge’s structural integrity finally gave out and the city required a replacement. Construction began… but so did World War II. 450 of the nearly 500 men, working on London’s most majestic bridge, were called to action. 100’s of women, with Zero Trades experience, were drafted to continue the construction. And they successfully built what was secretly known as The Ladies’ Bridge. Efforts to complete the bridge were halted as bombs dropped on London.  Sadly, the women’s contributions were also swept away, when the men returned from war and the bridge was completed. There was no official documentation or recognition of its nearly all-female construction team. In Karen Livesey’s documentary, “The Ladies’ Bridge”, she “explores why the bridge builders and many thousands of female construction workers had been written out of history.” The interviews with these women are truly inspiring and a great history lesson. Click here to watch the full documentary and learn more about the Ladies’ Bridge:  www.theladiesbridge.co.uk

#WELDLIKEAPRO

Meet Cynthia Phillips, aka @hotsteelwelding, a fabricator, freelance sculptor, novice skateboarder and road trip enthusiast who’s moved 8 times to find the job of her dreams. Before she became a set builder for celebrities, like Katy Perry & Beyonce, she was a printmaking student at Alfred University looking for something more creative and hands-on. After a semester of glass blowing, Cynthia tried her hand at metal fab and was immediately hooked. She began building sets for local theaters and used her networking skills to find jobs all over the country, including an international gig building the NBC News’ set for the 2016 Olympics. As a travelling artist, Cynthia says, “I experience a lot of anxiety before showing up at a new shop. I always feel I have to prove myself and explain why I want to be a welder. Also, harassment is a real issue; I’ve left a shop because of this. But that’s why you network. You learn who you want to work for and with.”Learn more about Cynthia by visiting CarmenElectrode.com to read our blog that shares more of her story.
